12.6.2026 Exploring the World Through Facts

This week in Maple Class, in English, the Y5 children continued their learning about the Titanic. They developed their journalistic writing skills by writing the recount paragraphs, incorporating eyewitness quotes and creating effective closing paragraphs for a newspaper report about the disaster. The children focused on using formal, journalistic language and factual reporting techniques to engage their readers.

In Maths, the Year 4 children practised their 3, 11 and 12 times tables to improve their fluency and recall. The Year 5 children explored the links between percentages, decimals and equivalent fractions, developing their understanding of how these representations are connected. In addition, they took part in a MoneySense lesson where they considered the questions, “Do I need a bank account?” and “How can I use a bank account?” They explored the role of banks and learned how bank accounts can help people manage their money more effectively. The children also developed their understanding of key banking vocabulary and the different services that banks provide. Through discussion and collaborative activities, they considered why people choose to use bank accounts and how they can support effective money management.

In Geography, the children explored the geographical features of North America. Working with partners and using iPads for research, they investigated some of the natural and man-made wonders found across the continent. Using the information they gathered, they created colourful and informative posters, showcasing interesting facts about these remarkable landmarks while developing their research and presentation skills.

In PSHE, the children focused on understanding emotions and resilience. They used a wide range of vocabulary to describe the intensity of different feelings, discussed the difference between pleasant and unpleasant emotions, and explored strategies that can help them build resilience when facing challenges.

In Art, the children continued to develop their creativity and artistic skills through practical activities, carefully applying techniques and ideas to their work. Well done to everyone for another week of excellent effort and enthusiasm for learning.
